World No. 1 men's golfer makes decision as he attempts to repair his marriage after recent revelations of womanizing

World No. 1 men's golfer Tiger Woods of the United States has decided to take an indefinite leave from the game as he attempts to repair his marriage after recent revelations of his womanizing.

In a statement on his Internet site, Woods said he realized the disappointment his "infidelity" has caused his wife and children. The golfer said he is deeply sorry and that he did not know if he can repair his family, but he wants to try.

Woods did not say how long he would take a break from the game and asked everyone - including fans, sponsors, his foundation and his competitors for understanding.

Woods has been at the center of a firestorm after recent revelations of affairs with several women.

His personal problems came to light after he wrecked his sport utility vehicle outside his exclusive Florida home early on November 27. Tiger was briefly hospitalized for minor injuries and released.

He later admitted to "transgressions" that have hurt his family but did not say he had been unfaithful to his wife. Friday's statement was the first time Tiger had used the word "infidelity."

Some information for this report was provided by AP, AFP and Reuters.
