Sources said Sunday the soldiers had encountered the members of the Kurdistan Workers' Party, or PKK, late Saturday on a road near the town of Nusaybin in Mardin province, which is close to the Syrian border.

Sources said two soldiers died at the scene, while a third died later at a military hospital.

Clashes between Turkish forces and Kurds have increased since the PKK called off a yearlong cease-fire in June. The group cited repeated Turkish military attacks for ending the truce.

The PKK has been fighting for Kurdish autonomy in southeastern Turkey for more than 25 years.
