Attack in Iraq Kills 8 Soldiers, 3 Civilians

Iraqi officials say eight Iraqi soldiers and three civilians have been killed in violence in Diyala province.

Police say gunmen broke into a house in the town of Sadiyah Wednesday, killing three people inside.

Police say the attackers then lured Iraqi soldiers to the house. The house blew up when the troops arrived, killing eight soldiers and wounding four others.

Also Wednesday, a government official said gunmen shot and killed a prominent female doctor in Baghdad. The official said armed men broke into the home of the chief of the Alwiyah maternity hospital in central Baghdad. The intruders killed the doctor and tied up her husband, but spared him.

Wednesday's incidents occurred as the country prepares to begin observing the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, when insurgents typically step up their attacks.

Tuesday, a series of bombs exploded in the Baghdad neighborhood of Baiyaa, killing at least three people and wounding 11 others.

Police say multiple bombs exploded in a main shopping area and more blasts followed when police arrived minutes later.

In other violence, officials say gunmen shot and killed the leader of an anti-al-Qaida militia Tuesday in Babil province.

The man was the leader of the local Sunni tribal militia known as the Sahwa (awakening) in the town of Jurf al-Sakhr. Two of the leader's bodyguards were also wounded in the shooting.

Some information for this report was provided by AP, AFP and Reuters.
