At Least 12 Killed in Iraq Central Bank Attack

Gunmen have attacked Iraq's Central Bank in Baghdad, killing 12 people and wounding more than 20 others.

Government officials say the attackers detonated at least six bombs Sunday during an apparent effort to rob the bank. The attackers and Iraqi security forces later exchanged gunfire.

At last report, the attackers were positioned on the roof of the bank, in a standoff with security forces.

Iraq has experienced a string of major robberies in recent weeks.

Last month, robbers stole $5.5 million from a state-owned bank in the southern Shiite province of Najaf.

Earlier that week, masked gunmen escaped with a large amount of gold and cash in a brazen daytime robbery that left 14 people dead.

Some information for this report was provided by AP, AFP and Reuters.
