Philippine President Creates Anti-Corruption 'Truth Commission'

Philippine President Benigno Aquino has launched his first executive order, creating a truth commission to investigate possible corruption by the administration of former President Gloria Arroyo.

Mr. Aquino announced the order Friday, saying the move would bring "necessary closure to allegations of official wrongdoing and impunity."

The commission will probe allegations of corruption in a deal with a Chinese company to provide broadband Internet access in the Philippines, among other questions.

The commission has until the end of 2012 to finish its investigation.

Mr. Aquino campaigned for the presidency on an anti-corruption platform.

Former Supreme Court Chief Justice Hilario Davide has been selected to head the commission.
