Japanese police have released a leader of the 1989 Chinese pro-democracy protests, after arresting him for allegedly trying to force his way into the Chinese embassy in Tokyo last week.
Wu'er Kaixi was taken into custody after he jumped over a steel fence in front of the embassy on Friday - the 21st anniversary of China's crackdown on the demonstrators in Beijing. The 42-year-old activist was freed Sunday while police continue their investigation of the incident.
Wu'er told Japanese media he was trying to get back to China to see his aging parents.
The former student activist managed to escape the crackdown on June 4, 1989, when China's government sent tanks and troops into Tiananmen Square to crush weeks of anti-government protests. He fled to the United States and eventually settled in Taiwan.
