Prominent Nigerians Ask President Yar’Adua to Resign

Prominent Nigerians are asking President Umaru Yar'Adua to address the nation as proof of his ability to lead or resign from office on the grounds of ill health. This, as acting President Goodluck Jonathan was unable for the fifth time to see Mr. Yar'Adua since his return last week.

Reports say attempts by several governors, lawmakers and leaders of the ruling PDP have also failed.
The country will survive the current political uncertainties, says PDP member Senator Bassey Ewa-Henshaw.

“I am not overly concerned. I admit it is somewhat unusual. It may be that the president is not in [good enough] health to appear in public yet.”

Senator Ewa-Henshaw faults the government handling of President Yar’Adua’s poor health and says more information is needed to reduce tension around the country.

“I think the president is our president and we ought to know his state of health or what is going on with him. Unfortunately that is not happening at the moment. We hope it will happen soon.”

Senator Ewa-Henshaw rejects suggestions to impeach President Yar’Adua.

“I know that some people have talked about impeachment. Personally, I am not sure whether that is the right route to take. I think what the National Assembly and the Senate has done may be more effective than impeachment. We have seen the defect in the constitution and we have gone ahead to amend it, so the issue of impeachment in this circumstance now becomes unnecessary.”
