Congo Volcano Spews Lava

Officials in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo continue to monitor the eruption of Mount Nyamulagira.

On Sunday, the volcano spewed lava and ash into the nearby Virunga National Park, which contains habitat of endangered chimpanzees and other wildlife.

The eruption has not yet affected nearby residents, but officials say they are concerned that ash emitted by the volcano might contaminate water supplies used by communities and wildlife in and around the park..

The Congolese Wildlife Authority has said the lava flow from Mount Nyamulagira is likely to destroy the habitat of 40 endangered chimpanzees on the mountain's lower slopes.

The volcano is some 22 kilometers from Goma, the capital of North Kivu province.
