| Pope Benedict XVI gives a copy of the new version of the Catechism of the Catholic Church to a lay couple |
The Catechism of the Catholic Church presents the Church's teachings on a vast array of subjects, from the 10 Commandments to abortion.
At 205 pages, the newly pared-down version is written in a question-and-answer format. Available in pocket-size, it is meant to be more accessible for the world's Roman Catholics.
The compilation is not a new Catechism and does not present a watered down version of teachings.
Pope John Paul II had asked the present pontiff, then Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, to prepare this shorter compilation two years ago.
