African Leaders Sign Great Lakes Peace Accord

A group of 15 African leaders have signed an agreement pledging to promote peace and security in Africa's Great Lakes region.

The leaders gathered in the Tanzanian capital, Dar Es Salaam Saturday to sign the framework agreement, as part of a two-day summit organized by the United Nations and the African Union.

U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan, who attended the signing, says the document gives the region a chance for peace, stability and development.

Under the agreement, the leaders pledge to disarm rebels, prevent the flow of arms, and improve security in the region.

Africa's volatile Great Lakes region includes the Democratic Republic of Congo, Rwanda and Burundi, where millions of people have died or been displaced by long-running conflicts and genocide killings over the past decade.
