Darfur Rebel Leader to Appear Before ICC

The International Criminal Court says it has summoned a Darfur rebel faction leader to face suspected war crimes charges.

Bahr Idriss Abu Garda is scheduled to appear voluntarily before the ICC in the Hague for an initial hearing on Monday.

He will face charges stemming from a 2007 attack on 12 African Union peacekeepers at Haskanita in North Darfur.

The ICC has been investigating alleged war crimes in Sudan's Darfur region.

In March, the court issued an arrest warrant for Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir on charges of war crimes and crimes against humanity in Darfur.  The Sudanese president has rejected the court's authority.

The ICC is the world's only permanent tribunal for judging suspects of war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide.
