Zimbabwe Cholera Epidemic Makes Its Way To Country's Rural Areas

The World Health Organization issued a new update Monday on cholera epidemic in Zimbabwe showing the total of deaths reaching 1,937 from 38,334 cases as of Sunday.

Chipinge district of Manicaland province produced the most new cases at 258.

The Mahombekombe suburb of Kariba, a resort town on the Zambezi River in Mashonaland West province, recorded the largest number of new deaths with nine fatalities.

WHO said Shambwe in Beitbridge district, Matabeleland South province, was identified as one of the latest areas to be hit with an outbreak of cholera.

Executive Director Itayi Rusike of the Community Working Group on Health told reporter Patience Rusere of VOA's Studio 7 for Zimbabwe that the disease is spreading to rural areas where people use wells as opposed to boreholes which provide cleaner drinking water.
