Turkey Charges 2 Al-Qaida Suspects in US Consulate Attack

update

Turkish media said prosecutors have charged two suspected al-Qaida members with having ties to a deadly attack in July outside the U.S. consulate in Istanbul.

Three police officers and three gunmen were killed in the incident, which began when the attackers drove up to the consulate and fired on a police guard post.

It is not clear what role the two al-Qaida suspects may have played in the shooting. In the past, other people have been charged and detained in connection with the attack.

Separately, Turkish prosecutors charged nine suspected Kurdish rebels with involvement in a double bombing that killed 17 people in western Istanbul in July. More than 150 people were injured in the attack, which occurred on a shopping street in a residential area.

Turkey has seen violent attacks by various groups in recent years, including leftists, Kurdish rebels and radical Islamists.
