United Nations special envoy Ibrahim Gambari has extended a five-day
visit to Burma until Saturday, in hopes that he will be able to meet
with detained democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi.
Spokesman for her National League for Democracy Nyan Win said Gambari met with leaders of the NLD for 90 minutes Friday.
Gambari also met briefly with party leaders Wednesday, but has yet to meet with Aung San Suu Kyi.
Gambari
and Aung San Suu Kyi were to meet on Wednesday, but for unknown reasons
the Nobel peace laureate did not attend the meeting.
Gambari's mission to Burma is meant to revive talks between Aung San Suu Kyi and the country's military government.
Gambari
has visited Burma four times since the country's leadership carried out
a bloody crackdown on democracy protests last September. But so far,
talks have yielded few results.
Last year, the Burmese
government appointed a liaison, Aung Kyi, to act as a go-between with
Aung San Suu Kyi following September's bloody protests.
The two, however, have not held talks since January.
A
spokesman for the NLD said Wednesday that Gambari brought news that
U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon will visit Burma in December for
talks on the country's political problems.
