Iran's top nuclear negotiator has agreed with the European Union's foreign policy chief to continue talks aimed at resolving disagreement over Iran's nuclear program.
Iran state television reports Saeed Jalili spoke by telephone Monday with the EU's Javier Solana, just days after the European Union placed new sanctions against Tehran over its nuclear program.
The sanctions include inspections of cargo traveling to and from Iran, and tight scrutiny of parties doing business with Iran.
Tehran says the program is for peaceful purposes to generate electricity. The United States and several other nations say Tehran is enriching uranium in an effort to acquire nuclear weapons.
The five permanent members of the U.N. Security Council - the U.S., Britain, France, Russia and China - along with Germany, have offered Iran a package of incentives if it halts its nuclear program. Iran has said it wants more details before giving its response.
The world powers have threatened additional U.N. sanctions if Tehran does not accept the offer.
