McCain Has Best Fundraising Month in June

An aide to Republican presidential candidate John McCain says the Arizona senator raised more than $22 million in June, and had about $27 million available for his presidential campaign at the end of last month.

Rick Davis told reporters Thursday that between Senator McCain's campaign fundraising and what the Republican National Committee has on hand, about $95 million are available ahead of the November election.

Presumptive Democratic nominee Barack Obama set fundraising records this year, taking in $287 million by the end of May. However, Senator Obama spent heavily in his primary campaign battle against former rival Hillary Clinton.

McCain has agreed to accept public financing later this year, while Obama has refused it. The move will limit McCain to spending around $84 million between the Republican convention in September and the general election in November. Obama will not face that restriction.

Earlier Thursday, Senators Obama and Clinton teamed up in New York to address a group of women voters.

Obama is trying to win over Democratic women who adamantly supported Clinton during the primaries and are reluctant to fully back the presumptive candidate.

Some information for this report was provided by AFP and AP.
