Police in Bangladesh say unidentified gunmen have shot and killed a public prosecutor who led the case against six Islamic militants who were convicted and, later, executed.
Lawyer Haider Hossain was gunned down on Wednesday evening near a mosque in the southern town of Jhalakhati.
Hossain prosecuted a case against six militants from the outlawed Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh group. They were convicted of murdering two judges in a 2005 bombing and their appeals for clemency were denied.
The government hanged the six militants on March 30, including the group's leader, Shaikh Abdur Rahman.
The organization is trying to introduce strict Islamic rule (Sharia law) in Bangladesh, a secular, but largely Muslim, country.
No other details on the prosecutor's death are available.
Authorities accuse the banned group of orchestrating other bombings, including Bangladesh's first suicide attacks, which killed at least 28 people in 2005.
