Acehnese Mark Anniversary of Indian Ocean Tsunami

Survivors of the devastating earthquake and tsunami that swept across Indonesia's northern Aceh province marked the first year anniversary of the disaster - with prayers for the more than 169,000 people who perished in the disaster in Indonesia.

Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono led a group of a thousand tsunami survivors, dignitaries, and aid workers in prayer on the shoreline in Banda Aceh where the tsunami struck.

"We stand here together today in remembrance of that suffering paying respect, once again, to the good men and women and all the children lost to the sea," he said.

All across Aceh province, bells rang and people bowed their heads in prayer. It was the worst hit region of the 12 Indian Ocean nations hit by the tsunami, which killed more than 230,000 people.
