Meteorologists say Tropical Storm Dennis has strengthened in the central Caribbean, and is moving towards Jamaica, Haiti and the Dominican Republic.

Another tropical storm, Cindy has made landfall in Louisiana.

The U.S. National Weather Service says Cindy is moving north into the south-central United States, packing winds up to 112 kilometers per hour. Early Wednesday, the storm's center was about 40 kilometers from the city of New Orleans. Emergency officials report some wind damage in the city, and say the storm has left tens of thousands of people in Louisiana without electricity.

A tropical storm warning is in effect for parts of Mississippi, Alabama and Florida.

Meanwhile weather reports say Tropical Storm Dennis continues to strengthen over the Central Caribbean, and could bring heavy rain to parts of Haiti, Jamaica and Cuba.

A hurricane watch has been issued for the Cayman Islands, Haiti and Jamaica. A tropical storm warning is in effect for the south coast of the Dominican Republic.

Some information for this report provided by AP, Bloomberg and Reuters.
