In northern Iraq, five people were killed and at least 13 others wounded in a car bomb explosion near the oil city of Kirkuk - in the town of Tuz Khormato.
And, in Samarra - also to the north - three U.S. soldiers were hurt when three suicide attackers targeted a U.S. military base.
The U.S. military says three American soldiers were killed in two attacks in the city of Mosul Sunday. It says U.S. and Iraqi forces detained 285 suspects on Sunday - the first day of a major operation against insurgents on the western outskirts of Baghdad.
Separately, the military says soldiers also carried out six raids in Baghdad Sunday, detaining 22 suspects and confiscating weapons and$6 million in U.S. currency.
