Afghan Authorities Foil Suspected Car Bomb Attack

Afghan police have foiled a suspected car bomb attack in the western city of Herat, while in the capital, Kabul, a small car bomb exploded but caused no injuries.

Police in Herat say they found rockets, mortar rounds and land mines in a Toyota late Sunday. Officials say they suspect the explosives were to be used in a car bombing. It is unclear who was planning the alleged attack.

The discovery came around the same time a bomb exploded in Kabul, leaving no casualties.

Afghanistan's ousted Taleban regime has been blamed for much of the ongoing violence in Kabul.

Meanwhile, the French News Agency says the Taleban has claimed responsibility for a roadside explosion in the southern city of Kandahar that killed one Romanian soldier and wounded another.
