Eight Dead in Kenya Tribal Fighting

Kenyan officials say at least eight people died in fighting sparked by disputes among tribal groups over water rights.

Police say the fighting started Saturday when Maasai youths invaded the farm of a local official from the Kikuyu community in Rift Valley province. The youths accused him of diverting water from the Ewaso Kedong river which they say they need for their cattle herds.

Witnesses say hundreds of people fled their homes as youths armed with machetes and spears also attacked vehicles and homes in the region.

Maasai tribes have criticized Kenya's government for unfairly taking away traditional land and water resources more than three decades ago.
