Powell Meets Kenyan Youths for Frank Discussion About Sex, AIDS

U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell has told a group of Kenyan youths that society must discourage promiscuity and other risky sexual behavior if the spread of AIDS is to be stopped.

Mr. Powell had a frank discussion Saturday in Nairobi with Kenyans in their teens and 20's about problems such as the resistance to condom use and the cultural expectation that young Kenyan girls will have sex with much older men.

The U.S. secretary of state told his audience that tribal acceptance of such behavior would have to change in order to protect young people. About seven percent of Kenyan adults are infected with HIV, the virus that causes AIDS.

Mr. Powell is in Africa to witness the signing of a historic peace deal in Nairobi to end 21 years of civil war in Sudan.
