Peruvian Journalist Detained After Trying to Pass President Toy Bomb

A Peruvian television journalist has been detained on attempted terrorism charges after trying to hand President Alejandro Toledo a suspicious package that turned out to be a fake bomb.

Heidi Grossman - a reporter for a show called "Cuarto Poder" and her photographer, were detained Wednesday in Lima at a public event that the president was attending.

The show's director says Ms. Grossman was working on a story based on a survey that showed most respondents would like Mr. Toledo to receive a bomb for Christmas.

He says members of the show decided to make a toy bomb, saying that is what Ms. Grossman tried to hand the president. Ms. Grossman describes as "absurd" the charge against her.

Polls show President Toledo has a national approval rating of only about nine percent.

Some information for this report provided by AP and AFP.
