Iraqi Forces Seize Explosives in Baghdad Raid

Iraqi security forces say they have seized explosives and arrested 25 people who planned to carry out terrorist attacks in the capital.

A Baghdad military spokesman, Major General Qassim al-Moussawi, said Iraqi forces confiscated 400 kilograms of powerful explosives (C4 and TNT) and 60 explosive devices during search operations throughout Baghdad on Tuesday.

Iraqi government spokesman Ali al-Dabbagh said forces carried out the raid after receiving a tip from a citizen of possible car bombings in the city.

Authorities imposed strict security procedures and restricted traffic, causing gridlock throughout Baghdad early Tuesday.

The security operation comes as Iraq is preparing for nationwide parliamentary elections in March. Officials have warned insurgents trying to disrupt the vote could try to launch attacks as the election nears.

Baghdad has been hit by a number of high-profile bombings in recent months, mainly targeting government buildings in the city.

Northeast of the capital, security officials say at least two police officers were killed in a roadside bombing in Diyala province on Tuesday.

Some information for this report was provided by AP and AFP.
