Chinese Company Sends Striking Workers Home from Ethiopia

A Chinese company has flown back to China the majority of estimated 400 Chinese employees that went on strike for two weeks at the Mesebo cement factory in Mekelle. The workers charge some have suffered physical injuries in clashes with company officials over wages.

Ethiopian federal police have placed tight security last week around Mesebo cement factory expansion being operated by Hafie Cement Research and Design Institute and the subcontractor, Jention. The plant has been shut down for 30 days.

The contractor has so far deported 302 of the 420 workers to China.

The workers told VOA that 800 birr, a portion of their monthly wages, is paid to them but the rest of their salary which was to be deposited in their individual accounts is missing. Some of the workers said there was no money in their account for the last three months.
