Mozambique Police Prepare for More Protests

Police in Mozambique are on alert, bracing for more protests against rising food prices.

Three days of demonstrations and riots last week left 10 people dead and more than 400 others injured.

Police say anonymous mobile phone text messages are circulating, urging people to resume the protests on Monday.

The capital, Maputo, was calm Sunday, but police say they are patrolling the streets to prevent a repeat of the unrest.

The demonstrations began in Maputo on Wednesday after the government introduced price increases on bread, water, and electricity.

some cases, protesters blocked streets with burning tires, leading to clashes with police.

The government says the increases are the result of rising prices worldwide and will not be reversed.

Mozambique, despite a high growth rate in recent years, remains one of the world's poorest countries. Per capita income is an estimated $900, one of the lowest in Africa.

Some information for this report was provided by AFP and Reuters.
