Man Arrested for Possible Attack on Afghan Plane

Afghan officials say authorities have arrested a man for allegedly trying to carry out an attack on a passenger plane.

Officials say security personnel aboard the plane were able to detain the man before he could carry out the attack on Sunday.

The French news agency says the incident occurred aboard an Ariana Afghan Airlines flight from Kabul to the Iranian city of Mashhad. The agency quotes airline officials who say the man began kicking a window and the emergency exit door while the plane was airborne.

Afghan officials say they are questioning the man to determine his motive.

Separately on Sunday, Afghan authorities say a rocket fired by insurgents, apparently aimed at security forces, missed its target and killed four civilians in the Marjah district of southern Helmand province.

Elsewhere in Helmand, a roadside bomb struck a police vehicle on Sunday, killing four police officers.

In western Afghanistan, Afghan officials say coalition forces in Herat province killed 10 Taliban militants Sunday after the militants beheaded four members of an Afghan community defense force.

And two NATO troops were killed in southern and eastern Afghanistan Sunday.

Some information for this report was provided by AP, AFP and Reuters.
