Little Hope of Survivors After Ghana Mine Collapse

Officials in Ghana say many people are feared dead after an illegal gold mine collapsed in the country's south.

Officials say about 140 small-scale miners became trapped near the town of Dunkwa-on-Offin Sunday, after rain caused a cave in.

Witnesses say some people managed to escape from the mine before the roof came down.

Rescue workers are pumping out water and excavating in an effort to retrieve bodies and any survivors.

Local officials say the chance of finding anyone alive inside the mine is slim.

Ghana has many abandoned gold mines that are worked illegally by farmers who were evicted from their land and miners who lost their jobs.

Some information for this report was provided by AP and Reuters.
