Afghan Forces Recapture District From Taliban

NATO-backed Afghan government forces have recaptured a remote district that the Taliban seized last week near the Pakistan border.

A NATO statement Tuesday said the joint force gained control of Barg-e-Matal district in northeastern Nuristan province without firing a shot. No one was hurt during the operation.

The Afghan Interior Ministry said the successful operation by Afghan forces shows their improved planning and capabilities, even in the most remote locations of Afghanistan.

Afghan government forces withdrew from Barg-e-Matal a week ago after hundreds of Taliban forces swarmed into Nuristan from Pakistan.

Also Tuesday, four Afghans held in the country's main U.S. prison at Bagram, north of Kabul, appeared before Afghan judges. The four, a father and three of his adult sons, are charged with bomb-making.

U.S. officials described the hearing as a first step in a plan to hand over control of the detention facility at Bagram Air Field to the Afghan government.

Elsewhere, the Danish military says two bombings in southern Afghanistan killed a Danish soldier and wounded five others Tuesday. Most of the roughly 700 Danish troops in Afghanistan are based in Helmand province.
