Four Dead in Political Violence in Kenya

update

Doctors in Kenya say the death toll from Friday's riot in the city of Mombasa over a proposed new constitution has risen to four.

Two people were killed when police opened fire on a crowd protesting a decision to ban a rally by politicians opposed to the new charter. Another two succumbed early Saturday.

Several others were wounded in the violence.

Late last month, four people died when supporters clashed with opponents of the new charter in the western town of Kisumu.

On November 21, Kenyans will decide whether to accept the first overhaul of the nation's constitution since independence from Britain 42 years ago.

Critics say the document fails to create a strong prime ministerial post to curb the president's sweeping powers.
